Markup vs. margin — what's the difference?
Markup is profit measured against your cost. Margin is profit measured against your price. They're never the same number, and mixing them up is one of the most common ways contractors underprice a job.
Example: a job costs you $1,000 and you add a 20% markup, so you charge $1,200. Your profit is $200 — but as a share of the $1,200 price, that's only a 16.7% margin. If you actually needed a 20% margin, you'd have to charge $1,250, not $1,200. Over a year of jobs, that gap adds up fast.
